I know that Detective Fulbright is a really good guy! Maybe he's a little unsettling, and not very smart, and obviously bad at his job, and holds eye contact a little bit too long, and laughs uncomfortably loud, and seems to really like tasing Simon more than is professionally appropriate, and not very smart- . . .

If he's been possessed by a demon, all that means is that the demon is good at pretending to be the person Fulbright-san used to be.

As I've said, mademoiselle, the demon masquerading as Fulbright-san is a skilled actor. Continuing to base our current thoughts about him on his past behavior - what some of you remember him being like - is a terrible mistake.

And you don't think it's a stretch to assume that all of us who knew him before would be so easily fooled by an impostor?

I'm sorry, monsieur, but the reason we don't have a direction is because these demons are so good at masquerading as our friends, our married partners, our comrades. Don't you think if it was obvious someone would have said something by now?

I think we would know if Detective Fulbright was an impostor!

Based on what, exactly?

If it was that easy, we wouldn't have to have a trial. Isn't the whole thing with demons that we can't tell 'em apart from the rest of us?

Is there any evidence that demons can't be determined from the rest of us? Maybe we should put him on the stand, see if we learn anything.

Does something this disorganized even count as a trial? Looks more like a bunch of frightened people standing around yelling at each other to me.

Trial law comes down to evidence. You can throw around all the accusations you want. If there's no evidence that Kimblee's a demon, and there's no evidence that Fulbright's one of the faithful, we can't say either of those allegations are true.

So you would prefer to let us die off one by one, or perhaps in pairs, every night, rather than take a risk.

I don't like the idea of being picked off by those things any more than you do. But I'd rather not send someone to death if there's a chance they could be innocent, and I don't think I'm the only one.

If you have a better way to figure out who is what, I am happy to hear it.

There's circumstantial evidence for this particular claim at least, which is more than we have otherwise. This entire thing is suspicious, mademoiselle, you have to admit it is.

...She did mention "sinful behavior" or something like that, though? But I don't think anyone's done anything too out of the ordinary.

I suppose we could have everyone list what sins they've indulged in over the past 24 hours, but I feel like that's going to get into TMI territory pretty quickly.

Our Lady works in mysterious ways, and sometimes the way to really teach a lesson is by letting people figure it out themselves. But if we can't find a way to figure this out without any more than blind accusations, I don't see how we're any better than those unwashed tainted hordes.
